Giovanni Schiaparelli was the first to popularize “canali” on Mars. By his observations of the planet he meant “channels” or “grooves”, but Percival Lowell’s later interpretation of artificial “canals” took hold of public imagination.

On this globe, north is up, putting some names here are upside-down. Schiaparelli, like many mapmakers of his time, drew Mars as he saw it in his refracting telescope, which inverts the image.
