Jean-Henri Focas (1909 – 1969) was a keen observer of Mars who was among the first to draw indications of craters on Mars before they were first imaged by spacecraft. In 1933 he drew the region Edom (immediately right of the twin spikes near globe center) as a dashed circle. We now recognize this as Schiaparelli crater, one of the largest on Mars. This is also a prime location in the 2015 Ridley Scott movie “The Martian” based on Andy Weir’s 2011 novel.
