Vesto Slipher ( 1875 – 1969) was the first to discover that distant galaxies are redshifted, indicating the expansion of the universe. We remember him here because he worked as assistant director at Percival Lowell’s observatory, eventually becoming director and greatly expanding upon his predecessor’s canal-infested maps.
